The generative media landscape is evolving fast — and now, we finally have the data to prove it. The State of Generative Media Survey Report 2025 offers a deep look into how developers, creators, and organizations are adopting AI-driven image and video generation tools.

Conducted with insights from nearly 300 developers and creators, and distributed in collaboration with Fal, the survey captures how people are actually using generative models in production, creative workflows, and experimental projects.

What the community revealed

According to the report, Google Gemini has emerged as the most popular image generation model, while ChatGPT remains the dominant interface for users accessing generative media tools. This combination of accessibility and power continues to make AI creation mainstream, lowering technical barriers for artists and engineers alike.

On the video side, Google Veo leads adoption at 69%, setting the pace for cinematic AI storytelling. It’s followed by Kling, Hailuo, Runway, and Alibaba’s video AI, each building strong user bases for specialized use cases like cinematic video generation, motion design, and marketing campaigns.

Creators take the lead

Interestingly, the report finds that personal creators — independent artists, solo developers, and small teams — dominate adoption. Many larger organizations are still in prototype or exploration phases, experimenting with AI tools but not yet scaling them across workflows.

This individual-led wave mirrors early-stage adoption patterns seen in past technology revolutions. Creators are driving innovation first, testing the boundaries of what’s possible with image and video generation models before enterprise use catches up.

Where the tools are used

While image generation is far ahead in maturity, video generation remains early-stage but growing rapidly. Most image models are currently being used for:

  • Entertainment & creative storytelling — from short films to game assets
  • Education — visualizing complex topics through AI-generated imagery
  • Marketing — dynamic campaigns, visuals, and personalized content

Video models, by contrast, are often tested in smaller, one-off projects as creators explore the limits of motion fidelity, lip-sync, and narrative coherence.

Access and usability trends

The dominance of ChatGPT as the preferred access point highlights how conversational interfaces are becoming the default for creative workflows. Instead of complex UI or manual pipelines, users increasingly describe what they want in natural language — a shift that’s redefining accessibility in creative tech.
